From 9 July to 22 August, TENT. presents 'If you say something, see something', the graduation show of the PZI Master Fine Art. Twelve artists from various countries present new installations, photographs, videos and performances. The exhibition is curated by Mai Abu ElDahab in collaboration with artist Guy Ben-Ner. The title of the exhibition, 'If you say something, see something', is taken from the title of a poem by Charles Bernstein. Like this word play, it skews the habitual hierarchy of form and content.

Mai Abu ElDahab is director of the art space Objectif Exhibitions (Antwerp, BE) and was invited as guest curator for the final presentation. For the past six months, she has been working together with the twelve participating artists on the basis of a brief informed by the students' interests and written by artist Ben-Ner on her request.

Presentation of Promotieprijs 2010

Before the opening, the Promotieprijs 2010 will be awarded to one of the graduates. The Promotieprijs is an initiative by Stichting Promotieprijs. The jury for the Promotieprijs 2010 consists of: chairman Hugo Bongers (secretary Rotterdamse Raad voor Kunst en Cultuur), David Baars (architect), Elizabeth Kleinveld (artist, director Artstart). Last year's Promotieprijs was awarded to Rachel Carey (US).

Publication

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication edited by Mai Abu ElDahab and the artists. Design: Kaisa Lassinaro. The publication is available from the reception desk at TENT. for € 4.

July 2: Winners Awards on the Threshold 2010

On Friday July 2 2010, Willem de Kooning Academy held its annual Awards on the Threshold Ceremony in the Bibliotheektheater and the Hofpleintheater in Rotterdam. The ceremony is part of the bachelor of arts graduation programme. This year's winners are: fine artist Sae Inukai, audiovisual designer Joost van der Wiel, and art teachers Aline Yntema and Ellen Leijnse. Aline and Eline share an award.

Since 1962, the city of Rotterdam hands out Awards on the Threshold. Each year, three awards go to the most promising graduate of each of WdKA's three bachelors of art - one for Fine Art, one for Design and one for Fine Art & Design Teacher Training. The Award on the Threshold consists of a specially designed trophy and € 5.000 in prize money.

Come to WdKA's BLAAK10 gallery on July 7 for the fopening of the 'Best of Graduation 2010' expo and the launch of WdKA's alumni magazine REX No2. Festivities start at 17hrs.

On July 7 BLAAK10's special summer exhibition 'Best of Graduation 2010' kicks off. While our students are out celebrating their well deserved holidays, WdKA presents a selection of the best works by graduates of our bachelor courses in art, design and education: the stars of 2010. WdKA Fashion Design alumni Amber Brandsma (Award on the Threshold '09) and Marlou Verheijden have each designed a collection especially for the Museum van Volkenkunde in Leiden. On July 2, you can enjoy their collections during the Museum Night. There will be a show each hour from 20.00 until 1.00hrs.

Amber graduated from Willlem de Kooning Academy's Fashion Design course in 2009 and won an Award on the Threshold for her 'Langweilig' collection.

The judges were full of praise: "Introvert, intuitive and at the same time highly intelligent and precise, she adds depth to her thought process and form. That's how she communicates."

June 16 '10: WdKA's Krooning '09 | '10

Blood, sweat and tears. The 'Krooning '09 | '10' is finally here. An analogue and digital catalogue of all the graduates of the Class of 2010, presented at our 'MADE at WdKA' Graduation Festival.

The paper version is the fifth in line of the 'Krooning' publications. The digital version is the fourth.

You'll find work by students that graduated in fine art, design and teacher training in fine art and design. They are mentioned in alphabetical order and placed within the three WdKA Schools. Take a glance at www.krooning.nl and make sure you order your copy of the Krooning '09 | '10.

'Krooning' is the Dutch word for 'Cooronation'; the double 'o' is a reference to our alumnus Willem de Kooning (his name in Dutch meaning 'the king'...hence the crowning motive of this 'Krooning'). Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), born and raised in Rotterdam, was trained as an artist at the Rotterdam Academy. Since 1998, our Academy proudly bears his name. In 1926, just 22 years old, de Kooning left Rotterdam for America and ended up in New York City. There he developed into one of the major artists of the twentieth century.

Krooning '09 | '10. Date of publication: June 16 2010. The digital version of Krooning '09 | '10 will is available on a special website; there you'll can also order a hard copy and find earlier Krooning editions.

June 15 2010: Fashion students strike @ TIA

Once again, our first year fashion students have been successful at the Dutch Triumph Inspiration Awards. Mariska Vijverberg came second with her design 'Fusion'. Katrien Baaij's 'The Embrace' - inspired by Rodin's 'The Kiss' - received the Cosmopolitan Public Prize.

On Tuesday June 15 2010, the third edition of the Triumph Inspiration Awards took place in Amsterdam's Westergasfabriek. This worldwide design contest urges young, talented fashion students to put all their passion into the design of a lingerie piece. This year's theme was 'Shape Sensation'.

Our winners received their prestigious awards from a professional jury: Claudia Straatmans (chief editor Cosmopolitan), Anne Marie Commandeur (trend forecaster, founder style institute) Antonie Kamerling (singer and actor), Carine van den Broeck (product manager Triumph) and fashion designer Truus Spijkers. The catwalk show was presented by TV personality Froukje de Both.

Twelve finalists from ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Utrecht School of the Arts and Willem de Kooning Academy (Katrien Baaij, Marlies Woning, Mariska Vijverberg and Nadja Wering) entertained the audience with their creations, music and styling.

In the end, Peet Dullaert's (ArtEZ) 'Sensimotion' received the first prize. He will represent the Netherlands during the international Triumph Inspiration Awards in Londen on June 16.

Last year, Kathinka Feijs, Roy Kersten and Demyarlin Aloë (then 1st year Bachelor Fashion Design) surprised friend and foe by winning all three awards during the Dutch Triumph Inspiration Award 2009 in the Supperclub in Amsterdam. A year earlier, then first year Fashion student Anke de Vor came second with her concept ‘Triumph Disposable', disposable lingerie made from biologically disposable material.

It's no use denying it: the World Cup shirts by WdKA's second year Advertising students Bas van de Poel and Daan van Dam are this summer's smash hit.

The young designers came up with a shirt that you can pull over your head when one of Holland's players has scored. For a moment, you'll feel like Robin van Persie, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar or Wesley Sneijder.

Stick the students' names in Google and you'll get thousands of hits - from here to the States. There are speculations that the shirts will go on sale next week.

During the 'MADE at WdKA' Graduation Festival, there will be several side events. One of these events is the 'Tuk-Tuk Art Route':

The 'Tuk-Tuk Art Route' is an initiative by two Fine Art students, Pauline Schreursand Annelies Bakker. Both will graduate this year. On Friday June 18, you are invited to explore all that young creative talent in Rotterdam has to offer. At LP II, you can take one of the tuk-tuks and follow the Art Route to Deliplein situated in Katendrecht. Along this route, you will be exposed to a variety of temporal forms of art. During your ride, you will experience a wonderful, creative and lively environment that will leave you wondering for more.

May 23 '10: PZI advisor wins Palme d'Or

Willem de Kooning Academy and its affiliated Piet Zwart Institute are proud to announce that Keith Griffiths, external curriculum advisor at the Lens-Based Digital Media programme, has won a Palme d'Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2010.

'Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives', produced by Keith Griffiths and his colleague Simon Field (Illuminations), received the prestigious award during the famous French festival on May 23.

The Palme d'Or (Golden Palm; MA) is the highest prize awarded to competing films during the festival. It was introduced by the organising committee in 1955.
